About Poverty Matters

In 2007, Poverty Matters provided over 6,000 meals, 4,000 blankets and hundreds of bags of clothing to the homeless living on the streets of Los Angeles.

There are 88,000 homeless in Los Angeles County on any given night and shelter space for only half.

Poverty Matters provides critical outreach services for those homeless living on the streets of Los Angeles.

In addition, our 2007 advocacy programs included:

  • legislative visits opposing cuts in the California budget to low income families and individuals
  •  radio ads of our voting rights PSA featuring actor Edwards James Olmos
  • access to health care for all

2008 is set to be a challenging year for Poverty Matters.  With a $14 billion estimated budget shortfall in the California Budget, it is imperative that we have the resources to fight back against cuts to critical state programs that aid the blind, disabled, elderly and the poor.

Without funding for these programs, homelessness will skyrocket throughout California, the elderly and disabled will lose critical health services from the state health care program medi-cal, and low income families, especially children, will go without food and other necessities.

In 2008, Poverty Matters will embark on a new project to train the homeless to meet with elected officials directly and advocate on behalf of their community.
